YSL Rouge Volupte Lipstick Review

YSL Rouge Volupte Lipstick

This weekend, while everyone was at the beach or barbecue for the Fourth of July, I was lipstick shopping. Not that I spent the entire weekend doing that – I actually did go down the shore (as New Jerseyans would say) to celebrate my mother-in-law’s birthday. But, I also managed to catch a bit of retail therapy at Nordstrom.

I wanted to pre-order the New MAC Giambattista Valli Lipsticks which I recently wrote about. As I walked through my beloved Nordstrom, I immediately saw the Yves Saint Laurent lipsticks I was planning on purchasing around my birthday in August. I was saving these for a special occasion!

YSL Lipsticks

I first laid my eyes on the YSL Rouge Volupte Lipstick and was in awe. The packaging is so beautiful and elegant that it’s virtually irresistible.

I swatched a few of the colors and ultimately picked the Nude Beige (1) color. The Nude Beige is a creamy natural beige with a warm pink undertone. It’s the kind of color I would wear every day. The lipstick itself has a soft shine and silky finish. As far as coverage goes, it provides light coverage that is mostly opaque. The more you apply, the more the color intensifies in pink (see swatch below). On the left is what the color looks like after one application and on the right is what the color looks like after a few applications – you’ll notice it’s more pink.

The YSL Rouge Volupte Lipstick has been around for a while and it is still one of the more popular lipsticks on the market. Despite the heavy price tag ($36), people still flock to this legendary lipstick. While I think that the packaging is the main reason people are still loving these, there’s a few things to love about the formula too. The formula is moderately hydrating, has a medium-weight, and provides full coverage in one stroke.

This is my first YSL lipstick purchase and I’m pretty happy with it. On a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being the best), I give this four stars.

Stars

Pros: packaging (it’s simply gorgeous!), creamy & smooth texture, long-lasting, contains SPF 15.

Cons: price, has a soft scent which transfers to your lips*.

*the scent is not too strong but I’m personally not a fan of it because it reminds me of drug store brand lipsticks like Loreal.

While I love most things about this lipstick, I believe that there are plenty of other similar lipsticks on the market. You’re really paying for luxury with YSL. YSL is considered a high end brand so unless you’re looking for some fabulous eye candy when you bring out this lipstick, you can easily get a comparable one for at least half the price. Also, the lipstick can last for a few hours and it lasted about 3 hours on me but I consider this wear time to be average.

During my shopping visit, I also purchased the YSL Pop Water Glossy Stain which I will talk about in my next post. I think each lipstick deserves its own post as there’s so much to say about these!

Until next time, lovelies!

Xx

  1. I think I’m the only who doesn’t like lipsticks by this brand. They look awful on my lips 😦

    1. I’ve read some reviews with people saying the same thing – that it doesn’t look good on them. It seems this lipstick is not for everyone. Some say its too oily and the pigmentation was so-so. There’s no way I would spend $36 for a lipstick if I didn’t like it. I happen to like it but still think you can get the same benefits of this lipstick from other brands at a much lower price which is the main reason I gave this 4 stars. Thanks for your response! I will check out your blog because I absolutely love cats and makeup! I used my cat for one of my photo shoots on the TF chocolate bar. You should check out this handsome tabby here https://shayfabs.wordpress.com/2015/06/19/too-faced-chocolate-bar-eye-shadow-palette-review/ 😉 xx

    1. This lipstick is easy to love right? The packaging is gorgeous and the color of the lipstick is one of my favs. I love any kind of nude, especially with pink undertones. The formula is awesome too. I just wish it wasn’t so expensive but you certainly get what you pay for. xx 🙂
