Shiseido Pureness Balancing Softener Review

Hi everyone!

The Shiseido Pureness Balancing Softener is an alcohol-free “lotion” toner / softener. It is used for softening, hydrating and balancing blemish-prone skin.

I have oily/combination sensitive skin and have always had a difficult time choosing the right skin care products. The issues I have are: redness, blemishes, oiliness, and uneven skin tone. This product claims to help hide imperfections, improve the wear of foundation, and fill in the appearance of fine lines while counteracting blemishes, dullness, redness, and an uneven skin tone.

To apply, you press 2-3 pumps of the product on a cotton round and smooth it over your skin.

I bought this product at Sephora for $24.50. The lovely woman that worked at Sephora spent a great amount of time with me testing different skin care products in order to help me find something to combat my skin issues. Once she brought out the Shiseido Pureness Balancing Softener, I was immediately intrigued. The packaging alone is great; a true minimalist Japanese design. She then showed me how well it absorbs into the skin. She made a fist and pumped the product on the back of her hand. Unlike any other water-based product that would roll right off the skin, the Shiseido product stayed put and absorbed quickly into my skin. I was amazed!

At the store, this product felt great on my skin. Since it is alcohol-free it didn’t burn once applied. My skin felt soft, hydrated and looked a bit more even-toned. It also has a soft scent that reminds me of baby powder. Unfortunately, after I took it home and used it a few times, it gave me new blemishes. I started to break out bad and my skin had more redness than ever before. I stopped using this product and will never go back to it again. It actually took a few days for my skin to get back to “normal”. As much as I wanted to love this product, the only thing I ended up liking was the packaging. Bummer!

Shiseido is Japanese brand that has been around for ages. In fact, it is one of the oldest cosmetic companies in the world. Therefore, I was excited to try this product and thought it would live up to my skin’s expectations. Unfortunately, it seemed to cause more harm than good on my skin. In hindsight I should have taken a sample of this product home before committing to the purchase. Lesson learned!

If you have oily/combination skin that is sensitive and/or acne-prone then I would not suggest this product for you but if you have normal to dry skin this product might work well for you. The best thing to do is to take a sample home to try a few times before digging into your wallet and purchasing.

Have you tried this product before? I’d love to hear how it worked for you.

Until next time loves!

  1. I wonder what ingredient in the product caused the break out? I always like to investigate and try to narrow it down so that next time I can avoid. Too bad this didn’t work for you – I’ve not tried this from Shiseido but I do generally like their skincare – I use their Bio-Performance line for my face and eye cream.

    1. Yeah I’m not sure what it was. I have sensitive skin to begin with so there must be something in there that doesn’t jive with my skin. I’m glad to hear some of their other skin care products work for you!
