Surratt Beauty Lipslique Lipsticks

A few months ago I was on social media and came across a makeup brand I had never heard of before called Surratt Beauty. I can’t remember the specific post or where I saw it but I recall seeing images and reviews of their Lipslique Lipsticks and, as any true beauty or makeup lover out there does, I started to research the company and their line of products.

Troy Surratt, a top New York City makeup artist created Surratt Beauty – a Japanese inspired makeup line – three years ago (which explains why I haven’t heard of this brand before). Troy’s former mentor was Kevyn Aucoin who was an extremely successful makeup artist, photographer and author. I’m sure some of you have heard about or read his books: The Art of Makeup, Making Faces, and Face Forward. I actually bought Face Forward years ago!

Anywho, when it comes to trying out makeup products from newer brands, I go in one of two directions. Either I try their most famous product – the one that gets the most hype, or I try something simple like a lipstick. In my opinion, you can learn a lot about a brand through their lipsticks.

There are a ton of lipsticks out there to spend your hard earned money on. With so many options and price points, why would you spend $34 a pop on these lipsticks? Well, I didn’t buy all of these at the same time. I first purchased the shade Hevyn (a rose shimmer color) from Sephora to try and really truly loved it. I started to wear it daily. I then decided to try some of their other shades like Pom Pom (dolly pink), Perfectionniste (pinky rose), and Eglantine (deep wild rose).

Lipslique Lipsticks are a twist-up lipstick (twists clockwise) with a sleek black design. As far as the packaging goes, it is very simple – slim and black. Nothing fancy going on here.

As far as the product itself goes, the Lipslique Lipsticks are light, creamy lipsticks with some shine. On the lips they feel light, creamy, and moisturizing.

You can build up the color with these or just go sheer by putting 1-2 layers on for minimal opacity. These lipsticks have pretty good color payoff even if you want to go sheer. I wouldn’t consider these lipsticks to be highly pigmented as you have to build them up to get the more intense color but they produce light-medium pigmentation when applying 1-2 layers and medium-high pigmentation when applying 3-5 layers. In my swatches below, I applied the product on the back of my hand about 4 or 5 times to show the highest pigmentation they can produce. Wear time is just a few hours before you need to reapply.

While I think these lipsticks are great, are they worth $34 each? Probably not but I have spent more on other lipsticks that I enjoy less. Surprisingly, I really like the twist up feature.

Have you tried these lipsticks or other products from this brand?  As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

With lots of love,
